
On 9 September, STOFF2 officially presented its LIZZEY® demonstrator to the public in Berlin-Tegel. Combining innovative Zink-Zwischenschritt Electrolysis (ZZE) technology with STOFF2’s unique expertise, LIZZEY® has the potential to enable cost-effective hydrogen production at the interface between variable renewable energy generation and reliable hydrogen supply. By helping to bridge this gap, the technology can make a significant contribution to the decarbonisation of industry in Germany and beyond.
With LIZZEY®, ZZE technology is now moving beyond the laboratory and into real-world operation. The containerised demonstrator, directly connected to electricity markets, will provide valuable insights under practical operating conditions. The launch marked an important milestone for STOFF2 and attracted numerous visitors to the site, complemented by a dedicated expert dialogue at Futurium Berlin.
ZZE-GREEN-H2 Project Team Meeting
Since the launch of the ZZE-GREEN-H2 project in February 2024, the consortium partners have worked closely together to address key challenges related to cell, stack and system design, technology scaling, and plant operation. The successful integration of the technology into a containerised demonstrator represents a major milestone in the development of ZZE technology. A particular highlight was the opportunity for project partners to exchange ideas directly at the demonstrator site in Berlin-Tegel.
For STOFF2, the project marks an important step towards the commercial deployment of ZZE technology. The knowledge gained through the project provides a solid foundation for further scale-up, industrial manufacturing and the advancement of the technology’s readiness level.

Demonstrator Visit
In the afternoon, 32 representatives from politics, industry and civil society joined the STOFF2 team to learn more about the capabilities and potential applications of LIZZEY®. Discussions focused on the performance of the technology, its system design and its role within the hydrogen value chain.

Particular interest was generated by the technology’s complete avoidance of PFAS and rare-earth elements. The discussions highlighted the growing importance of resilient supply chains and a secure, independent energy supply for many stakeholders.
Expert Dialogue at Futurium Berlin
Later that day, around 90 experts from politics, public administration, academia and industry gathered at Futurium Berlin for a discussion entitled: “How can green molecules be produced intelligently and used to build a resilient energy system?”
The event opened with keynote speeches by Alexander Voigt (STOFF2 GmbH), Dr Albrecht Reuter (Fichtner IT Consulting GmbH), Helmut Kleebank, Member of the German Bundestag, Kurt-Christoph von Knobelsdorff (Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy), Dr Christine Falken-Großer (German Renewable Energy Federation) and Prof. Dr Kathrin Goldammer (Reiner Lemoine Institute).

The speakers highlighted the technological, political and economic conditions required for the successful expansion of renewable energy and the effective integration of green molecules into the energy system.
